As counselors, weโre particularly prone to burnout. The days are filled with ups and downs. It can feel like youโre on an emotional rollercoaster with students, colleagues, and that ever-growing to-do list!ย
But, amidst the chaos, we’re here for a purposeโto make a lasting impact on our students’ lives.ย
Letโs talk (real talk) about counselor burnout, the signs, and how to reignite our passion for our profession.
Why is being a school counselor so exhausting?
It’s not just the endless caseloads and the perpetual juggling act we’ve mastered. Nope, it’s the emotional and social whirlwind of our students’ lives combined with the ever-expanding job description that leaves us feeling like we’ve run a marathonโฆ every day.
Our official job description doesn’t come close to capturing the emotional labor that comes with addressing student trauma and crises daily. Let’s be real; we’re human, and that empathy we bring to the table takes its toll.ย
But, being a school counselor can be equally fulfilling. The chance to make a real impact on students’ lives creates ripples of positive change that go way beyond what we can see today.
What does burnout feel like as a school counselor?
Letโs talk about school counselor burnout. How do you know if you’re knee-deep in it?
Look out for these classic counselor burnout signs:
- Emotional Exhaustion: Ever feel like you’re dragging yourself to work and walk in with an overwhelming sense of dread hanging over you? Yep, classic burnout symptom. Compassion fatigue is real!
- Reduced Sense of Accomplishment: Questioning your impact or feeling like you’re running on empty? Itโs burnout knocking at your door.
- Detachment Vibes: Suddenly feeling cynical and detached from work, colleagues, and students? Burnout alert!
- Physical Signs: If youโve noticed more headaches and fatigueโฆ hereโs your reminder that it could be the physical manifestation of stress.

I wanted a way to nudge you with some positivity once you leave this blog and go about your busy day, so letโs print these out and stick them absolutely everywhere you go. Your car mirror, your coat pocket, your lunchboxโฆ you get the idea.
What are the consequences of counselor burnout?
Ignoring burnout’s warning signs can have severe consequences. Youโre the expert here as a counselor yourself, but sometimes we need a friend to stop us in our tracks and remind us of the consequences if we keep trying to push through burnout without doing anything differently.ย
Hereโs your reminder, friend. You set out in this career to make an impact, but you canโt do that if youโre unable to be fully present for your students. You canโt make a difference if your mental and physical health are suffering.ย
Letโs tackle this together and reignite your love for this career! It is possible to find that spark of joy again and deepen your relationship with your students, your colleagues, and yourself.
How can I stay motivated as a school counselor?
1: Build strong relationships and lean on them when motivation is low.
Youโre surrounded by people all day long as a school counselor. Between the students, your colleagues, and families, relationships can make or break your experience in your career.ย
Building Relationships with Your Students
Building trust with your students helps lay the groundwork for success in your sessions. When your students feel seen, heard, and valued, they begin to believe in themselves, trust your guidance, and embrace the support you offer.ย
When this relationship is thriving, youโll be able to see the impact youโre making. Staying grounded in your work and relationships with your students will help keep you motivated, refreshed, and inspired.
Building Relationships with Your Colleagues
As a school counselor, forging connections with staff is as important as building relationships with students, especially when you may be the sole counselor in the building.ย
Every interaction with your colleagues is an opportunity to cultivate open communication and trust. It could be a casual encounter while microwaving your lunch or a collaborative effort during a crisis.ย
Trust among colleagues creates a supportive culture, reinforcing the idea that you are part of a team working towards a common goalโcreating a culture of support within the school.
Building Relationships with Families
Empathy is key with families, too. Understanding the unique perspective of the family can foster cooperation and shared goals in support of the child.ย
Fostering trust with families lightens the load of your responsibilities and adds fulfillment to your role. When you and the family are on the same team, the collaborative effort makes the journey more meaningful.ย
Action Item: Create a Counseling Newsletter
A while back, I ran a survey with the staff at my school and realized that teachers didn’t know much about what I do as a school counselor! That’s when I started sending out regular newsletters. I created two editionsโone for the staff and another for families.ย
Now newsletters are my secret weapon to showcase whatโs happening and make everyone aware of my role. It’s not just about me; it’s about creating an environment where we all work together to lift up our students and support one another.ย
Try incorporating testimonials from students, staff, or parents about the positive effects of your counseling program. Highlight specific moments that showcase the transformative power of your work.ย
Whether it’s a heartwarming student testimonial or a shout-out from a teacher, these snippets reinforce the value of your counseling initiatives. (And you deserve that pat on the back!)
2: Lead the Way to a Supportive School Culture
If your school could use a positivity boost, you could be the one to kick things off! Counselors play a crucial role in shaping a positive school culture.ย
Action Item: Try collaborating with administrators to implement a variety of morale-boosting activities strategically spread across the academic calendar. Incorporating morale boosters is a powerful way to create a sense of community among staff.
In times when tension fills the air, a well-timed morale booster can be a game-changer. These boosters are not about grand gestures; instead, they focus on simple, enjoyable activities that bring everyone together.
Morale-boosting activities can take many forms, like:
- Mystery gift-giving (โSecret Sunshineโ or โMystery Santaโ)
- Staff outings (Painting class, yoga, BBQ, etc.)
- Safe sharing sessions where staff can communicate frustrations and feel heard/validated
- Thank you notes to staff from students
- Treats in staff mailboxes (Chocolates, mints, trail mix, protein bars, small succulent, motivational quote or affirmation, etc.)
- Themed dress-down days (Decades Day, Sports Day, Wild West Day, Seasonal Swap Day, Fan Friday, etc.)
- Rotating potluck schedule (Try monthly potluck themes, like Soups & Stews, Healthy Eats, Around-the-World, Comfort Foods, Picnic, etc.)
These simple, thoughtful gestures contribute to a culture where positivity is celebrated.
3: Prioritize self-care to avoid prolonged counselor stress
I know youโve thought about helping your students with self-care. You may have even thought about promoting self-care among the staff at your school. But when was the last time you considered your own self-care?ย
I see you avoiding eye contact over there! Itโs been a while since youโve implemented your own self-care routine, hasnโt it? This is your sign to start taking care of YOU.
